What is a GSX report, and how do I read it field by field?

Published

GSX is Apple's Global Service Exchange, the system Apple and its authorised service providers use to look up and service devices. A GSX report is what that system holds for one unit: how it was configured, who first bought it from Apple and where, what coverage it has, which activation policy it is locked to, whether it has been unlocked, and the state of Find My and device management. Resellers use it to grade used stock; buyers use it to confirm a listing before paying.

This guide walks through a Full GSX report line by line, then explains the extra fields the Next Tether and Sold By variants add, and what a GSX report cannot tell you.

Identity: Model, Config Description, Serial, IMEI, IMEI2, Product Line

Model is the marketing name (iPhone 13). Config Description is Apple's internal configuration string, for example "IPHONE 13,CH,128GB,STARLIGHT": the region code in the middle (for example CH, ROW or NAUS) says which market the unit was built for, and the storage and colour follow. Serial Number, IMEI and IMEI2 identify the unit; dual-SIM iPhones carry two IMEIs and either one can be used for a check. Product Line is an internal Apple code that identifies the product family.

The check accepts an IMEI or a serial number, so Wi-Fi iPads, Macs and Apple Watch, which have no IMEI, are checked by serial. Such units return fewer lines, with no IMEI, EID or SIM-lock.

Sale: Sold By, Purchase Country, Purchase Date

Sold By is the distributor or carrier that first bought the unit from Apple, for example a carrier such as AT&T Mobility or Verizon Wireless, or a national distributor. It is not the current owner and does not change when the phone is resold. Purchase Country and Purchase Date are Apple's record of the original sale (a line called Estimated Purchase Date in some variants). Together they tell you the phone's origin, which matters for carrier-locked regions and for warranty terms.

Coverage: Warranty Status

Warranty Status reads Apple Limited Warranty with a Coverage End Date while the first year runs, or Out Of Warranty (No Coverage) afterwards; the Sold By variant adds Telephone Technical Support, Repairs and Service Coverage and AppleCare Eligible lines. A fresh purchase date together with an expired warranty is a sign of a refurbished or replaced unit, which the Replaced by Apple and Replacement History fields confirm.

Lock: Applied Activation Policy, Unlock Date, SIM Lock

Applied Activation Policy is the carrier policy currently applied to the device. A carrier name ("US Verizon Locked Policy") means the phone is locked to that network; "Unlock." or a policy containing the word Unlock (such as "Multi-Mode Unlock") means it is factory unlocked. Unlock Date appears only for units that were unlocked after sale and records when it happened. SIM Lock summarises the result as Locked or Unlocked.

The GSX Next Tether + iOS check shows three policies side by side: Initial Activation Policy (the policy at first activation), Applied Activation Policy (now) and Next Tether Policy, the policy the device will receive on its next activation. A phone whose Initial policy is a carrier and whose Next Tether reads "Unlock." was sold locked and unlocked later; one whose Next Tether still names a carrier will activate locked even if it currently works with another SIM.

Software and security: OS Version, Find My iPhone, MDM Lock

OS Version is the iOS build Apple last saw on the device, and the Next Tether variant adds First Activation Date and Last Restore Date. Find My iPhone ON means Activation Lock is active: the device cannot be set up without the owner's Apple ID, so a used phone should read OFF before you buy it. MDM Lock ON means the device is enrolled in a management profile (DEP/ABM) and will ask for the organisation's credentials at setup; the check reports it and does not remove it. The Next Tether variant also shows DEP Enrolled and Loaner Device.

Service history: cases, repairs and replacements

The Case History check lists every Apple support case on the unit with its date and summary, for example "Consumer Activation Lock" or "Unauthorized FMiP action"; summaries come in the language of the Apple region that opened the case. The Replacement History + Repairs checks return the Diagnostics, Escalations, Repairs, Cases and Replacement sections, and the picture variants add a screenshot of the GSX page as proof. "No data available", "No Case History" or "No Replacement" means Apple holds no record of that kind, the normal result for a unit that was never serviced; it is a valid result and not a refund case.

What a GSX report does not tell you

GSX reflects Apple's record, not the carriers'. It does not show whether the IMEI is blacklisted: lost, stolen and fraud reports shared by carriers live in the GSMA database and need the GSMA blacklist check. It does not show carrier-internal blocks such as unpaid bills, active lines or account locks, which the carrier's own eligibility check returns. And it does not name the current owner. Field coverage depends on what Apple holds for the device: missing lines mean there is no record, and that does not qualify for a refund. Every GSX check is a report only; the device is not unlocked and nothing is changed on it.
