When is a Cricket phone eligible for unlock, and what do "pending tenure" and "MyCricket app" mean?
Published
Cricket Wireless locks the phones it sells and unlocks them only after the device has met its tenure rule and is free of blocks. Every Cricket unlock, official or by IMEI, runs into the same three questions: has the phone been active long enough, is it blocked, and is it a model that Cricket unlocks remotely at all. The eligibility check answers all three in seconds, which is why it comes before the unlock and not after.
This guide explains the tenure rule, each line of the eligibility result, the three verdicts you can get, and what to do with each of them.
The tenure rule: 6 months, 12 for devices activated after 1 July 2026
Cricket requires the device to have been active on Cricket service for at least 6 months before it will unlock it. For devices activated after 1 July 2026 the requirement is 12 months. The clock counts active service, not time since purchase, so a phone that sat in a drawer does not accrue tenure, and a phone that was activated, deactivated and reactivated is judged on Cricket's own count. The check reports how many days are still needed, and in the older response format it prints Days On Network and the days left until eligibility.
What the eligibility check returns
The instant check returns the model with its Apple model number, then a set of yes/no lines and the verdict. Cricket Compatible says whether the model is one Cricket services at all; Authorized says whether the unit is known to Cricket as one of its devices. eSIM Support is informational. Currently Blocked and Future Blocked are the block flags: a lost-or-stolen report, an unpaid-balance block or a scheduled block show here. SIM Locked is the current lock state; Device Type and Replaced Device describe the unit. The last line, Unlock, is the verdict.
Field coverage depends on the source response: some responses come in the older format with ESN Status, Days On Network and the days left until eligibility instead. Missing lines are not a refund case; the check always returns a result.
Verdict 1: "Eligible for unlock"
The phone has met the tenure rule and carries no block. Order the Cricket clean & eligible unlock for iPhone (all models) or generic non-Apple devices; the order is processed automatically and the service page shows the current median time measured on real orders. A clean Cricket device is also accepted by the AT&T clean unlock + check status service, because Cricket is an AT&T brand. Do not order an unlock for a phone that is already unlocked: an already unlocked IMEI still consumes the order.
Verdict 2: "Device unlock pending tenure"
The phone is otherwise fine but has not yet met the tenure rule. The response includes the days still needed, for example "Cricket Service Not Activate For At Least 179 days". Nothing can shorten that period: an unlock ordered now comes back Not eligible and the order is consumed. Note the date, keep the phone active on Cricket service, and re-check after it; the instant check costs a fraction of an unlock.
Verdict 3: "Device Requires MyCricket app"
The phone is an Android unit that Cricket unlocks only through the MyCricket app on the handset itself. Such devices are not supported by the IMEI unlock, whatever their tenure. If you have the phone and the Cricket account, the app is the route; if you do not, the IMEI path cannot help.
Blocked IMEIs: Currently Blocked or Future Blocked = Yes
A block means Cricket has reported the IMEI as lost or stolen (or has scheduled a block), and the report is shared with the GSMA database. Unlock services reject it. The Cricket unbarring services remove the lost-or-stolen report so the IMEI reads clean at the carrier and in GSMA: one service covers iPhones up to the 14 Pro Max, a separate one the iPhone 16 and 17 series. Fraud-flagged devices are not supported. Unbarring changes the blacklist status only; it does not SIM-unlock the device and does not clear unpaid balances. Allow up to 24 hours after completion for GSMA to show clean, re-run the eligibility check, then order the unlock.
Instant check versus the standard eligibility check
Two Cricket checks exist. The standard one is processed by the source in batches, so the answer can take up to a day. The [INSTANT] variant answers in seconds and returns the full field set above. Both are reports only: the device is not unlocked and nothing is changed on it, and results are for reference, with final details subject to official sources. For a single phone the instant check is the obvious choice; the standard check remains for bulk lists where a day's delay does not matter.
Checklist before ordering a Cricket unlock
Run the eligibility check. Confirm the verdict is "Eligible for unlock" and both block flags read No. Confirm the activation policy names Cricket (the Carrier + SIM-Lock check shows it) so you do not submit the wrong carrier. Then order the clean & eligible unlock. A rejection by the source is refunded to your balance automatically and in full; the wrong carrier, an unsupported model or an already unlocked IMEI is not, which is the whole reason to check first.
